The Gastric Band — LAP-BAND® or REALIZE BAND
You keep hearing all about LAP-BAND but what is this device all about? How does it help the patient? Here is a brief look at the device, the procedure and what makes it safer than other conventional surgical treatments.
Used in bariatric surgery, the gastric band is a restrictive device. Generally, it is a ring made of silicone, hollowed inside. There are saline pouches placed along the inner surface of this ring. This ring can be adjusted, and it is designed to be minimally invasive while providing maximum safety. Allergen’s LAP-BAND® and Johnson & Johnson’s Realize band are the two bariatric devices we usually use for the surgery.
The surgeon inserts the device through laparoscopic procedure in which a tiny camera and fine surgical tools keep the surgery minimally invasive. An access port is embedded below the skin, and a tube is used to connect the access port with the silicone ring. Incisions are made in the wall of the abdomen. The gastric band is secured in place, around the upper portion of the stomach. Since the incisions are tinier compared to conventional bariatric procedures, the patient takes less time to recover, and the procedure is safer.
At our Las Vegas Center, the gastric band surgery is the only one we perform. But we go beyond surgery to provide comprehensive care, throughout the procedure, before, after and during. Obesity is a lifestyle disease, we recognize, and so we provide you with the processes and plans you need to transition to a healthier lifestyle, post-surgery. This means, you need to make changes to your diet, physical exercises and much more even as you begin to experience the feel-good of losing weight after the surgery. These are long-term changes that you need to “Live Healthy Ever After!”At our center, we help you do just that. We work with you in all these areas, helping you reach your target weight and maintain it over time. Live happily, say bye to obesity!
For some time after the surgery, adjustments are made to the gastric band to promote better healing. During an adjustment, a needle is inserted below the skin down to the access point that was embedded during the surgery. In this simple procedure, the saline content in the pouches is increased or decreased, to regulate the restrictiveness of the gastric band. This also gives the surgery another plus point, by making it easy to reverse, something that’s not possible with gastric bypass or gastric sleeve surgeries.
